Division of Urban Parks and Recreation

In 2003, the Massachusetts Legislature merged the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) and the Department of Environmental Management (DEM), into a new state agency, the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

A unit of this new department, called the Division of Urban Parks and Recreation, has taken over the duties of the MDC, including managing many park and conservation lands in Newton.
